Can you cut 1 Tonne of carbon pollution out of your life?
Take the challengeCheck out these fabulous carbon positive prefabricated homes that produce more energy than they use!
The world's first carbon positive prefabricated home has been designed right here in Australia by innovative modular building specialists, Archiblox.
In its lifespan the environmental benefit of planting one of these adorable homes is the same as planting 6095 trees. And with a plethora of anti-pollutant features, the houses are almost entirely self-sufficient.
We wanted to create a home which would encourage people to think about sustainability in every aspect of their lives – a healthy, environmentally responsible and self-sustaining lifestyle.- Architect Bill McCorkell
Constructed from modern, carbon neutral materials, each feature and room of the house has been meticulously designed to be sustainable and carbon positive. As a result, the prefab houses have achieved Platinum status – eTool's highest award for lifestyle assessment.
The 75 square metre house produces five kilowatts of solar power on the insulating green roof. Pots of edible plants line the walls and green sliding doors are used to block out the sun during summer, while insulating the house during winter. And the coating and adhesives of the house are all made of plant-based materials – formaldehyde free!
You won't find any mechanical heating or cooling – all air circulation is achieved by tubes that pull cool air from the earth, ventilating the house. Designed for maximum solar gain, the house faces north and has a sunroom that spans the length of the house.
Architect, Bill McCorkell, found it hard to choose favourites when it came to the features of the house:
The sunroom – and its lovely day-bed – is a highlight, but then again so are the cool tubes, the plant walls, the green roof… it’s hard to pick one thing!- Bill McCorkell
A prototype was recently displayed in Melbourne's City Square, though if it wasn't to your taste, Archiblox builds custom designed bespoke pieces so you can have your very own carbon positive dream home.
